Large octavo, two volumes, 1310 pp. 36 handcoloured engraved plates. Early brown calf and marbled boards, all edges coloured, a few inoffensive spots, otherwise a handsome copy.

This edition of Histoire naturelle de Lacepede was first published in 1856 and "the many subsequent volumes and editions [of treatises on vertebrates based on Cuvier and Desmarest] by this author follow Buffon and his teachings" (Casey Wood p. 424). The handsome plates by Edouard Travies "... one of the finest painters at work in the first half of the 19th century" (Jackson Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World p. 467) cover the following subjects: volume one, whales five plates, reptiles and batrachians 15 plates, fish four plates; volume two, fish twelve plates.
