Crocker, Arthur, editor.Presumably the first commercial Australian publication devoted to cage birds and modelled on the weekly English publication "Cage and aviary birds". Published weekly in black and white with a coloured banner heading, each issue of sixteen pages. Many issues are illustrated by Neville W. Cayley on the front wrapper and his first illustration (Diamond Firetail) is captioned "Mr Neville Cayley has drawn the whole series of Australian finches, nineteen in all, and each in turn will be illustrated in Australian Cage birds". Cayley has also contributed articles and accompanying vignettes; some of the vignettes appear to be by his father and were probably first published in A. J. North's Nests and Eggs ..., 1904-1914.
This very scarce publication is a fascinating look at the emergence of canary and budgerigar breeding with all the colour types and attempts to set standards. There is also a lot of interesting source material on establishing desirable birds (such as Scarlet-chested Parrots) and articles on the leading aviculturists of the day and their collections.
